Areca Palm

Product Description

Areca Palm - Dypsis lutescens

An attractive, yet easy-to-grow species whose palm-style leaves add a distinct, tropical-feel to your indoor spaces. It prefers indoor temps of 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit and an average amount of humidity. Cold drafts can cause brown spotting on leaves. It likes fairly bright, indirect light. Too much sun can scorch leaves and too little light with slow its growth. Well-drained, aerated soil that is evenly moist is a must, overwatering will cause root rot. Fertilize in spring and summer with either a general houseplant fertilizer or one made specifically for palms. Acera palms like to be pot bound to a certain degree so repotting on average every three years is recommended. When repotting be careful not to disturb the plant and root system too much. Replant only as deep as it was previously.

It is recommended that you use distilled or purified water when misting tropicals to avoid any calcium deposits that may build up on leaves. Also most tropicals prefer room temperature water.

Acera palms are listed by NASA as plant with air-cleaning properties. It is known to clean formaldehyde, xylene, and toulene from the air.

This plant is also listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
