Sansevierias

Product Description

Sansevierias are native to tropical areas of western Africa, Madagascar, and southern Asia.  They are a popular house plant and best known for their striking, upright, stemless leaves.  Use this plant to add a dramatic and tropical feel to any indoor space.

Foliage differs depending on the variety, but they are most often tall, sword-like, thick and narrow, although there are some that are rounded.  Leaves are different shades of green, again depending on the variety but most have striping or variegation in different yellow and white hues.

They are relatively easy to care for and can tolerate a variety of light conditions from low to bright, and even artificial light.  Keep in mind though that too much direct hot sun will cause foliage burn and too little light will weaken the color of its foliage.

Their leaves are water-storing and therefore they can tolerate a considerable amount of drought once established.  They do not however like soggy soil, which can cause root rot. Make sure they have proper drainage and be careful not to overwater them.  If the leaves of the plant begin to curl up at the ends it may be a sign they need more water.

Considered to be of the most effective air purifying house plants. Sansevierias have been found to remove benzene, toluene, trichloroethylen, xylene and trichloroethylene from the air. This plant is also known as Snake Plant and Mother-in-Law’s tongue.

Many tropical plants are toxic to both pets and humans if the leaves or other parts of the plant are ingested.  Sansevieria contains saponins  which are considered toxic to pets and small children, make sure to place your sansevieria plant out of their reach.
